Industrial Chic – Meera Mittal Designs.
Pretty, metal like, industrial chic aren’t really the adjectives used to describe fashion jewelry but chain smith Meera Mittal has changed that. With her baubles appearing in many glossies and fashion weeks, she is the haute designer of playful jewelry for grown women. Her jewel pieces are delicate constructions of edgy meets rocker chick made of fabrics, chains, metals and semi precious stones. From bib necklaces to long chain strands to collars to beaded cuffs Meera has something for everyone’s palette. Feminine meets industrial chic is how she describes her bejeweled baubles. We were lucky to meet and get to know this charming designer who was in town last week. Here are some excerpts of our interesting one on one chat session.
How did you get into designing accessories?
Ever since I was a child I always knew I had the creative streak in me. I loved playing with beads and could coordinate all my outfits. (laughs) I always knew I`d do something creative in my life. After studying Fashion Design at NIFT and having worked in the industry for over nine years, I realized my heart belonged in accessory design. Hence Meera Mittal Designs was born.
What inspires you?
The ability to constantly innovate designs from diversely different fabrics and materials that bring sheer delight to my customers every time is what inspires me. I am most excited creating accessories from an array of beads, fabrics and metals, combining them to come up with mind boggling statement accessories that generate that spectacular mix for max effect.
Jewelry trends for 2011 – I see a lot of hardware materials, a mix of different metals put together and vintage inspired jewelry.
Favorite jewelry designers – I love the work of Mawi and Lanvin.
Your jewelry style – Urban contemporary. I like jewelry to be very adaptable to any piece of clothing.
Most prized jewelry possession – Gold charm bracelets that my mom gave me. The charms are very significant to me and that’s why they are truly treasured.
Future plans – We are excited for our newly launched collection. We are in the process of retailing globally so we are looking forward to that. (Fingers crossed)
